What future do we want for Serra da Estrela?

After this summer’s environmental catastrophe in Serra da Estrela, in which at least 25 thousand hectares burned in successive fires over several weeks, it is essential to bring together all the interested parties in the territory and at the national level to prepare a serious and realistic proposal to the environmental recovery of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. In this sense, Rewilding Portugal sent a proposal for urgent ecological restoration measures to several key actors in the territory and with responsibilities in this matter.

Migrations are one of the oldest processes in the animal world, being seasonal movements from one place to another. There are different reasons why animals migrate. For example, some species migrate to take advantage of seasonal availability of different food sources, others to escape the harsh climate for part of the year, or for breeding reasons. In the Greater Côa Valley there were, there are, and there could be again several migrations of birds, fish and mammals.

A herd of ten Sorraia horses arrived at Vale Carapito last weekend. The first step to recover the importance that these large herbivores have in the management and modelling of the landscape. This native breed counts on only about two hundred individuals worldwide.
