Altano Rewilding

Altano Rewilding is the new wine launched under the Altano brand, by Symington Family Estates, in partnership with Rewilding Portugal, in bottle and in an innovative bag-in-tube format, which aims to contribute to nature conservation actions and to rewilding efforts that Rewilding Portugal is carrying out in the field.

The wine is a classic blend of the Douro, coming from vineyards with higher elevations in order to create a fresh, elegant and fruity profile obtained from the Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca grape varieties. The bag-in-tube cardboard format (2.25l) contains the equivalent of three bottles and is easily recyclable, in addition to having a carbon footprint much lower than the equivalent volume in glass and allowing good conservation of the contents — after opening — for a period of four to six weeks.

Each sale of the Altano Rewilding edition will contribute financial support to Rewilding Portugal’s efforts to protect and restore the natural landscapes of the countryside of Portugal.

A reinforced partnership

As part of their ongoing commitment to supporting social and environmental causes that contribute to a positive future for the Douro region, the Symington family has agreed to a long-term collaboration with Rewilding Portugal.

The financial support for Rewilding Portugal is being provided by the newly launched Symington Impact Fund, which started in January 2020 with an initial amount of 1 million euros to provide long-term funding for organizations and causes who are working on positive solutions to social and environmental problems in the Douro, Porto and Alentejo regions. The creation of Altano Rewilding reinforces this partnership and the common goals of both institutions.

“Rewilding Portugal is a natural partner for us – they are committed to regenerating nature on degraded or abandoned land in northern Portugal and their model involves boosting the local economy by developing nature-based companies that work to protect conservation efforts. We are deeply concerned about the environmental challenges facing the world today and are committed to doing what we can to support healthy ecosystems and contribute to a positive future for the communities in which we work” – Johnny Symington, President, Symington Family Estates
