Todos os dias, as manadas de cavalos Sorraia e Tauros percorrem a paisagem do Grande Vale do Côa, alimentando-se de matos e herbáceas presentes na paisagem. Ao fazê-lo e com a capacidade de consumir carga que estes animais têm, reduzem naturalmente a vegetação disponível para arder em possíveis incêndios florestais, ajudando a travar a propagação destes incêndios e criando assim espaço para a biodiversidade florescer sem constantes retrocessos.
Sabia que este nosso efetivo de animais consome atualmente já mais de 190 toneladas de biomassa por ano? Se este trabalho fosse feito por máquinas ou equipas humanas, teria um custo entre 15.000 € e 25.000 € em gestão de combustível anualmente!
Por isso mesmo decidimos lançar os nossos “Certificados de Unidades de Impacto”, onde o cidadão comum pode apoiar diretamente este serviço ecológico que estes animais proporcionam. O seu apoio ajuda-nos a garantir o bem-estar e acompanhamento das nossas manadas de cavalos Sorraia e Tauros, cobrindo cuidados veterinários, monitorização, e manutenção de vedações e pontos de água. Contribui também para aumentar o número de animais e expandir as áreas pastoreadas, permitindo que mais hectares sejam geridos de forma natural, reduzindo o risco de incêndios e criando espaço para a biodiversidade florescer nesta região.

Um estudo recente, publicado na revista Frontiers, confirmou que o pastoreio de cavalos semi-selvagens pode regular a altura da vegetação, reduzir o domínio das gramíneas e facilitar a persistência e a proeminência relativa de herbáceas na paisagem. Isto é particularmente relevante em paisagens mediterrânicas propensas a incêndios como o Grande Vale do Côa, onde o crescimento não regulado de gramíneas em áreas abandonadas e não pastadas pode aumentar o risco de incêndios florestais. Every day, herds of Sorraia horses and Tauros bulls roam the landscape of the Greater Côa Valley, feeding on the scrub and grasses. By doing so, and with their capacity to consume large amounts of vegetation, these animals naturally reduce the amount of vegetation available to burn in possible forest fires, helping to stop the spread of these fires and thus creating space for biodiversity to flourish without constant setbacks.
Did you know that our herd currently consumes more than 190 tonnes of biomass per year? If this work were done by machines or human teams, it would cost between €15,000 and €25,000 in fuel management annually!
That is why we decided to launch our ‘Biomass Certificates’, where ordinary citizens can directly support this ecological service that these animals provide. Your support helps us ensure the well-being and care of our herds of Sorraia and Tauros horses, covering veterinary care, monitoring, and maintenance of fences and water points. It also helps increase the number of animals and expand grazing areas, allowing more hectares to be managed naturally, reducing the risk of fires and creating space for biodiversity to flourish in this region.

A recent study published in Frontiers magazine confirmed that grazing semi-wild horses can regulate vegetation height, reduce grass dominance, and facilitate the persistence and relative prominence of forbs in the landscape. This is particularly relevant in fire-prone Mediterranean landscapes such as the Greater Côa Valley, where unregulated grass growth in abandoned and ungrazed areas can increase the risk of forest fires.
