In the Footsteps of the Iberian Wolf

To explore the life of this fascinating animal is to uncover a vital chapter in Iberian biodiversity, recognising the essential role of the Iberian wolf in wildlife and the need to protect this legacy for future generations. We recognise this wild animal in all its authenticity, as one of the most emblematic symbols of Iberia’s natural heritage and of human coexistence with wildlife. Distinguished by its elegance and resilience, it occupies a unique place in the heart of Portugal, playing a crucial role in the ecological balance, being a guardian of nature in the territories it inhabits.

The Iberian wolf sub-population in this area is quite isolated from the rest of the Iberian population, facing various adversities such as habitat destruction, scarcity of wild prey and persecution. In this territory, the invitation is to discover the wolf’s trails and remains, as well as nature tourism experiences, meeting the natural, historical and cultural heritage that characterises it.

Curiosities, beliefs and facts, the main myths, wolf tourism and territories of presence. Everything you need to know in this, the most comprehensive guide to this species ever!

Due to their resemblance to animals of a similar size, even experienced observers find it difficult to distinguish an Iberian wolf from a distance. That’s why this guide lists all the main differences between this species and other animals, as well as all its unique characteristics!

In addition, you can learn more about the role of livestock dogs in the defence and protection of the Iberian wolf, as well as the main rules and precautions to take if you come across one on one of your walks or trips into the territory. Protecting and supporting the role of these livestock dogs is also a unique and extremely effective way of helping the Iberian wolf to expand throughout this territory!

LIFE WOLFLUX TERRITORY

What LIFE WolFlux is doing for the Iberian wolf

Actions have been carried out to create conditions and minimise threats to the Iberian wolf subpopulation south of the Douro. Among the actions under the LIFE WolFlux project, the following stand out:

– Monitoring the Iberian wolf and its prey;
– Promote positive coexistence between the Iberian wolf and local communities by strengthening prevention measures in the territory, with the presence of livestock dogs, fencing and technical support;
– Creating subsistence conditions for the Iberian wolf by promoting habitat for an increase in the population of roe deer and other wild prey;
– Creating a network of wildlife ambassadors and a mobile surveillance team to support local communities and communicate with the project;
– Outreach and awareness programmes for children and adults, through clubs for children and young people.
