Rewilding Europe was established in 2011 as an independent foundation in the Netherlands. It has established itself as a pan-European initiative operating at the frontline of rewilding at a European scale and it wants to make Europe a wilder place, with many more space for wildlife, wilderness and natural processes. Rewilding Europe presents a vision in which wild nature is recognized as an indispensable part of Europe’s natural and cultural heritage and a necessary building block for a modern, prosperous and healthy society.
Associação Transumância e Natureza is a non-profit environmental NGO, created in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo in 2000 with the main goal to contribute actively for nature conservation in the region of Riba-Côa by creating “more space for nature”. ATNatureza has acquired several properties in the Special Protection Areas Vale do Côa and Douro Internacional e Vale do Águeda. Since its inception ATNatureza has accompanied the evolution of the populations of the most endangered bird species, contributing to their study and knowledge in the intervention area.
Zoo Logical is a Portuguese NGO, founded in 2011 by nine biologists with different fields of expertise. In 2011, Zoo Logical deployed a wolf monitoring project located in part of the region as the current implementation area. During this project, Zoo Logical has made strategic partnerships with local stakeholders, such as rural development organizations. Zoo Logical has also developed projects related with environmental education and wildlife awareness in which they have established international networking with European NGO’s.
The University of Aveiro is one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in the country. The Wildlife Research Unit of the Biology Department focuses on the fields of animal ecology, monitoring of natural areas and their biodiversity, among others. This unit has expert knowledge on wild ungulate conservation and management and has been responsible for reintroduction programmes, population studies and elaboration of monitoring plans.
